Profile in STEM: Katie Ledecky

You probably know Katie Ledecky as an Olympic champion, but did you know that Katie is a STEM advocate too? Katie uses statistics and video technology to analyze her swims and races.

She recently announced an online program, “Dive Into STEM powered by Panasonic” for middle school students to encourage them to pursue education and careers in STEM fields. Panasonic partnered with Ledecky because they recognize the need for a highly skilled STEM workforce to execute their long-term strategy and be competitive in their industry. Ledecky has studied Psychology at Stanford and said during the launch event at the CES Technology conference “Education has always been a really critical and central aspect of my life…I think a lot of people think that swimming comes first, but for me, the two have always gone hand in hand.”

Ledecky believes that the way to get more females involved in STEM is to capture their interest at a young age. Her own interest in STEM began when she was a student and had strong science and math teachers.

She enters the 2021 Tokyo games as a five-time Olympic gold medalist and 15-time World Champion and will be chasing more medals.
