The UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland is likely one of the most important global leadership events in recent history. This two-week conference (from October 31- November 12) brought more than 130 heads of state and government in addition to thousands of diplomats together with the objective to cut emissions from burning coal, oil, and gas. These are called fossil fuels and are extracted by mining or drilling. Large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, are released when fossil fuels are burned. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere which is a leading cause of global warning.
The events at the conference included many young leaders who are working diligently to prevent climate change. They combined their voices with global leaders seeking a united commitment to immediate action. You can learn more here. Link. It is inspiring to see people like you and me making a difference!
The younger generation is showing an interest in changing their behaviors to be more environmentally conscious and engage in climate activism. You too may have an interest in protecting our environment and using your talents to make a difference.
Our STEM education has an important connection to environmental health. STEM gives us an opportunity to learn how to protect our planet, minimize pollution, and prevent more global warming. STEM subjects will help us know how to conserve, protect, and restore damage to the world we live in. Here is an example: Science helps us understand how things work in nature and the importance of protecting our natural resources. Technology gives us the tools to monitor power and track water, air, and other types of pollution. Engineering helps us find innovative solutions and tools for protecting the environment. Math helps us calculate and analyze data about the impact of pollution.
If improving our climate is an exciting idea for you, here are some things you can do right now to help our environment:
- Cut down what you throw away by reusing or recycling.
- Conserve water. You can take shorter showers and turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
- Organize cleanup projects your community.
- Work with your family to create a compost pile. There are a lot of websites with instructions for composting so start with an internet search.
- Join or start an environmental protection club at school.
- Listen to a podcast or read online articles. This website suggests eight podcasts for students: Link
- Look into programs and jobs related to environmental science and alternative energy. There are a lot of career paths to consider such as solar power installer, agriculture and food scientist, forester, and environmental lawyer.
STEM education has the power to enhance our environment and promote positive and lasting change. Working together we can make a difference and protect our future.
