Join with me in celebrating National STEM/STEAM Day on November 8th. The purpose of this day is to encourage students of all ages to explore and develop their interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. There continues to be a shortage of STEM workers in the US as well as opportunities for improvement in student achievement in STEM disciplines, so this day is an opportunity to draw attention to the benefits that come from success in STEM education and occupations. Not only does it develop important skillsets and self-confidence, the US economy needs a strong STEM workforce to stay competitive in the global economy.
Here are some ways to celebrate this year:
- Go on a nature walk and document or draw what you discovered in a notebook
- Visit a museum (if you aren’t able to visit a museum, check out a virtual museum)
- Take a live or virtual coding class
- Conduct a science experiment (with adult supervision)
- Fly a drone
- Make a cake and decorate it with a science, technology, engineering, or math theme
- Read a book about a STEM leader or innovator
- Interview someone in a STEM career you are interested in
- Watch a STEM themed movie (see STEM Movie Night blog for a list of recommendations)
- Wear your favorite STEM gear
