Activities to Celebrate International Day for Women and Girls in Science

International Day for Women and Girls in Science

February 11th is International Day for Women and Girls in Science as designated by the United Nations in 2015. Did you know that less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only about 30% of all female students involved in higher education select STEM-related fields as their focus of study? Let’s find ways to remove barriers and celebrate girls and women who are leading the way forward. Here are some fun suggestions for celebrating International Day for Women and Girls in Science, or other STEM Days throughout the year. If you miss the opportunity to celebrate on February 11th, these ideas will help you recognize National STEAM day on November 8th!

Make Edible Candy or Food

There are many edible science kits that you can buy at places like Amazon and Target. This is a great way to run some science experiments that you can eat! If you are part of a Science club, this is a great activity for your club meetings too.

Run a Science Experiment

This is easy because there are millions of science experiment ideas on the internet. Check for ideas on Pinterest and gather your friends to have some experiential learning fun. Many experiments can be run with supplies you have around the house. Don’t forget to get permission and help from a parent or teacher!

Go to a Museum or Lab

Many museums, particularly those on or near a college campus have interactive exhibits where you can test out your science skills.

Watch a documentary or YouTube about Women in Science

Watching about the work women are doing in the Science fields can be very inspiring and is the perfect way to celebrate International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

Post on Social Media

Share your passion for Science by posting interesting information on social media. You might find new friends who share your excitement and interest in Science.

Talk to Your Science Teacher

If February 12th falls on a school day, connect with your Science teacher and see if they have any ideas about how to recognize this day during your class. Use your creativity about how to shine a light on International Day for Women and Girls in Science. You might even suggest that your teacher invite a female guest speaker who is in a Science profession.

While it is great to have a designated day, let’s not just make February 11th a day for Women and Girls in Science. We should do things every day to work towards a bright future where women and girls have a strong presence in scientific fields and use their skills and knowledge to make the world a better place.
