You may think of a STEM job as something in your future but consider finding a part-time or summer STEM job now. It is an excellent way to earn some extra cash and looks good on applications for college and scholarships. Besides, if you are going to work you might as well do something that you have an interest in or want to learn more about. As you explore options in your community, keep remote (online) jobs in mind. These jobs will give you some flexibility in your schedule, especially if you are involved in a sport, team or activity that keeps you busy.
Here are some examples of jobs that are perfect for students working part-time:
STEM camp or adventure program counselor/helper
Afterschool program centers (i.e. Code Ninjas)
Museum or aquarium (Children’s museums are a great option)
Tutoring in subject areas you have an interest in (private tutoring or in a tutoring center)
Warehouses or fulfillment centers that use technology
Phone customer service agent
Doing online research, shopping, surveys (i.e. Swagbucks)
If you have a special technology skill, consider posting on sites like Fiverr or Etsy. This allows you to work as a freelancer and expose people to what you have to offer.
As you get ready to start your job hunt, here are a few more tips:
Start your search by looking on job websites, such as Indeed.com or Monster.com.
Check with your STEM teachers to see if they have any connections or ideas. Your student counseling center might have ideas for jobs or internships.
Have your resume or information you would need for a job application ready to go. You never know when a STEM job opportunity might pop up.
Network with other people and find out if they know of any jobs that might be a good fit for you. Word of mouth is often the best way to find a great job.
Don’t give up. If you don’t find something right away, keep looking. The right opportunity will come along eventually.
